The Blue Note Years. The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff.

New York: Rizzoli, 1995. First edition. Item #30381

14" x 11". 203pp. Black cloth, in dust wrapper. Fine condition; fine jacket. With a foreword by Herbie Hancock. Wolff was a Blue Note executive and record producer. His iconic candid photographs of Blue Note musicians, usually captured during recording sessions were key factors in Blue Note’s marketing strategy. They helped create a branded identity of jazz as hip and cool. The use of Wolff’s photos as album cover graphics also broke through a racially - stereotyped portrayal of the African American jazz musician that had predominated the media during the first half of the twentieth century.
